Melissa, I highly recommend a Bernina. If you can get a simple used one (hard to find but well worth it), you'll get years of fun out of it. I got mine in 1973 (!) and it's still going strong. Used Berninas are actually quite popular because they're so easy to use and hold up well. Mine is not super huge and came in a carrying case that has held up very well.

Also, glad you like the frugal posts. I actually have written some others that I'll be posting soon :)

Thanks for your comments!

I have been thinking a lot lately about getting a sewing machine. My daughter is always trying to do make things out of fabric and fluff and it would be really handy for the things you have mentioned here in the above article. I don't have a lot of space and we are definitely beginniners, do you have a sewing machine suggestion?

Also, I want you to know I really appreciate you sharing these frugal type posts. It is definitely something we should all be thinking about.

Thanks, Pam, glad you liked it :)

Janet, thanks! Those are all great ways to use sewing skills. In fact, I'm going to be posting on quilting soon. I made my first quilt so long ago...I've never stopped loving quilts!

You're right on the money here! Learning how to use a sewing machine definately helps in making your dollars stretch. We have always used recycled denim quilts (made from old jeans) for everything from picnic blankets to drying off lambs. Old curtains from a thrift shop can be altered to fit your new windows in a new apartment. An overabundance of dishtowels (wedding presents here) can be remade into any number of useful items: rice bags for sore necks, tote bags, curtains for the kitchen window, doll dresses and more. Quilting provides us with an opportunity to turn our scraps into treasures and not only is it a thrifty way to use up scraps it also provides entertainment and pleasure to the woman doing the quilting!

Definitely!!! :) You are right, sewing is like driving a car, and so fun, and I love the feeling of accomplishment afterward. Great post!
