First Girl Scout of America, Mrs. Samuel G. Laurence, Demonstrating Fire Starting Methods
Unemployment is up and income is dropping; how do you keep your daughters in activities without spending a fortune these days? An article in our local newspaper makes the case for Girl Scouts.
It’s true that being in Girl Scouts is a lot cheaper than monthly dance lessons, sports, etc. It’s also a great way to give girls a chance to bond together while having fun and learning skills. I think the author of the article makes a good case for choose scouting over other activities.
Do note the comments at the end of the article. Commenter Anndee complains that God has been excluded from Girl Scouts. Unfortunately, the Girl Scout organization has changed a lot in recent years, and has become quite p.c. However, commenter Owensmomma suggests a way around that.
I was in Girl Guides (Canadian Girl Scouts) when I was a little girl. I did not like it. Too much camping. 🙂
My sister LOVED it and went all the way through it!
I was a co-leader for my oldest. We enjoyed it. But I have found w/my 2nd dd it is so liberated. Trying to hard to compete w/the boyscouts. And snobby. So she didn’t like it.
Daughter just joined the GS this year. I know that they technically took God out of their organization, but last night was Baby Gurl’s award ceremony and we prayed (as a group, to God) before and after the program. (Also, I guess it’s important to point out that we also had prayer at my 5th grade son’s promotion ceremony – in public school).
It’s been a really good experience for my girl. In fact it only took a couple of meetings before she was asking me to let her go in by herself (she’s 7 and shy). It’s done huge things for her self esteem. I’m happy with our local chapter.
Janet, I guess I was fortunate that the leaders I had weren’t big on camping…more so on crafts 🙂
BarbaraLee, sorry to hear it didn’t work out for your dd.
Iva, so glad your dd enjoyed it!
