My sister, who has spent her adult life in California, likes to tease me about my Midwestern accent. I always deny I have one. But then I took this quiz and I’m thinking maybe I do have an accent after all; as you can see, my result mentions Chicago (I was born there) and Wisconsin (I live there). How about you? Use the link below my results to test your accent.
What American accent do you really have?
Your Result: Northern
Your accent is Northern, which used to be the media standard in the ’50s and ’60s. Your accent could either be Inland Northern (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo) or the more broadcasting-friendly Upstate NY/Western New England accent. If you have the Inland North accent, outsiders probably ask you a lot if you’re from Chicago or Wisconsin. |

Mine is Midland. That comes not only from growing up further south than where I currently live, but also that the city-folk sounded more Northern, and the rural-folk sounded more Southern. I had family members that had the more rural speech, and we had quite a few kids at my edge-of-town grade school who were bussed in from the rural areas.
Interesting quiz, Barbara. Thanks for the fun!
Northeastern through and through. What a surprise. 😉
I like how this quiz was put together. I took a class in linguistics in college. This quiz was good at figuring out differences in accents. Whoever designed it really did a great job.
Peace and Laughter!
IIRC, Susan, you’re from downstate IL, right? After four years at the U of I, I developed a “southern accent,” according to my family. But my dad’s side came from Anna, IL (down at the tip) and I always thought they sounded truly “southern.” My Aunt Edie didn’t just say “yes,” she drawled “yay-yes.” 🙂
I agree, Cristina. It was actually his improved version of an original quiz about accents. Glad you liked it!
